Highlights of this tour
- Lake Ohrid – one of the oldest lakes in the world
- The UNESCO world heritage site Ohrid-Region
- The “tree of life”
- The highest point of the Lake Ohrid watershed
This tour starts from the centre of Pogradec city. We will drive by car for 30 minutes up to the Village of Alarup, where the hiking trail starts.
After about 2 kilometers hiking through shrubs with oak and hornbeam we reach a place called the Cerveni Well, 1500 meters above the sea level. Here we are in the so called “Dry Mountain”, a unique and inspirational landscape.
We walk on for about 3,5 km and reach the “tree of life” in a pasture area 2000 m above see level. It is the only tree that exists in this area. It serves as an orientation point in winter, when the trail is covered with snow.
The pastures we see here were cleared off from stones and pebbles by volunteer groups during the communist period; the stones were lined up horizontally and are still clearly visible today.
Along the way, we’ll be able to see grazing herds of sheep and goats.
After hiking for another 6.8 km we reach the top, Maja e pllajes se Pusit, 2288 m above sea level, where we can enjoy an amazing view: We are at the highest point of the lake Ohrid watershed. From here we can see three protected areas and lakes!
